General
We know we do not have to advise you to dress appropriately. We would expect you to know that your presentation will create the first impression and that most interviewers make a decision based on the first fifteen seconds in the room. As an example some consultancies would not want you dressed in a suit!
Research and planning are the two most important areas when preparing for an interview.
At Walker Dendle Technical Recruitment we offer practical advice on how to talk yourself into the job that you want with honest, informative guidance beforehand and constructive feedback after the interview.
Before The Interview
Documentation
Documentation is critical and ideally you should endeavour to compile a comprehensive portfolio to include as many of the following as possible:
* Hand-sketch details
* Drawings - both cad and hand-drawn
* Marketing sheets to include project information and images
* Design calculation sheets
* Reports or documentation to include structural surveys, cad standards or similar
Research
Background research is also critical and this can be gained via the following:
* Company website
* Job specifications
* Use Google (or other web search engines) to find more details on consultancy or named individual in business
At The Interview
* At the Interview ensure that you are confident with the details on your CV and expand where asked.
* With the job specification in mind, be prepared to discuss specific examples of competencies and achievements in your current and previous roles.
* Be relaxed, but not overconfident.
* Listen and take time to answer questions. Do not rush or jump in with the first thing that enters your head. Well thought out and measured answers are far more valuable than quick fire statements.
* Have a list of questions set out beforehand. This shows a real interest in the company and role, as well as demonstrating an informed approach. Ask open-ended questions to glean as much information as you can from the interviewer. This will also offer the opportunity for you to interview a prospective employer.
* Be prepared for "small talk" - current topics to demonstrate knowledge, communication skills and the ability to work in a team as well as structural engineering consultancy contacts etc
After the Interview
Ring your consultant ASAP with constructive feedback from the interview. Ideally after you have stepped out from the office!
We will then get feedback ASAP for you including hopefully detail of a potential offer.
